Esposende, Portugal
Esposende was a coastal week in late January 2023, a resort stay on Portugal's northern shore that followed our time in the Algarve.
Our experience
This is the Costa Verde — the "green coast" — a quieter, more rugged stretch north of Porto where the Cávado River meets the Atlantic.
We loved the contrast with the touristy south: windswept dune beaches, pine forests, fresh seafood, and a relaxed, local feel.
It's the kind of off-the-beaten-path Portugal that rewards travelers who venture beyond Lisbon and the Algarve, with big skies, crashing surf, and a slower northern rhythm all its own.
Esposende is home to the Parque Natural do Litoral Norte, a protected coastal landscape stretching along the Atlantic around the Cávado estuary, with extensive dunes, beaches, and pine forest.
Must-sees and must-dos
- Parque Natural do Litoral Norte — explore the protected dunes, beaches, pine forests, and coastal landscapes surrounding Esposende.
- Praia de Ofir — one of the area's best-known Atlantic beaches, backed by dunes and pine trees.
- Cávado River & Estuary — walk where the river approaches the Atlantic through a landscape of dunes, wildlife, and coastal vegetation.
- Esposende — explore the seafront, local restaurants, and the relaxed center of this northern Portuguese coastal town.
- Fresh seafood — make time for the fish and seafood that are central to the local coastal food scene.
- Braga & Porto — use Esposende as a base for day trips to two of northern Portugal's major historic cities.
Our pro tip
We found Portugal's northern coast best for travelers wanting a quieter, more local experience — it's cooler and greener than the Algarve, and the Atlantic here can feel wonderfully wild.
A car makes it much easier to explore the coast and nearby historic cities like Braga and Porto. Summer is the main beach season; if you're visiting off-season like we did, expect a calmer coast and pack a windbreaker.
