Kilkenny, Ireland
Kilkenny packs centuries of history into a walkable center where ancient stone and friendly modern hospitality sit side by side.
Our experience
Kilkenny was a charming medieval stop on our August 2024 Ireland road trip — a night at a guesthouse near the Kilford Arms as we made our way across the country. We fell for this compact, beautifully preserved city: a mighty Norman castle, narrow medieval lanes, the famous Medieval Mile linking castle to cathedral, and a lively pub-and-craft scene.
After the wild west coast, it was the perfect dose of history and small-city charm — the kind of place that makes a road trip sing.
Kilkenny has a remarkably rich medieval history and is often known as Ireland’s Medieval City. Its famous Medieval Mile runs through the historic center, connecting Kilkenny Castle with St. Canice’s Cathedral and many of the city’s historic sites in between.

Our pro tip
We loved Kilkenny as a one- or two-night stop on a driving tour — the historic core is wonderfully walkable, so park the car and explore on foot. The Medieval Mile is the spine to follow, connecting many of the major historic sights through the center of the city.
Pop into a traditional pub in the evening, and leave some time simply to wander the old lanes rather than rushing from attraction to attraction.
