Parker, Colorado
Parker was a family visit in November 2022 — a few nights at a SpringHill Suites in this Denver suburb, flying in by way of Phoenix.
Our experience
Set on the rolling high plains southeast of Denver at the edge of the Rockies' Front Range, Parker is a fast-growing, family-friendly town with a welcoming downtown and plenty of Colorado open space.
We came for the people rather than the sights, but we enjoyed the crisp high-altitude air, the easy access to Denver and the mountains, and the relaxed suburban-Colorado feel. It's the kind of trip where the destination is really the family you're there to see — and Parker made a comfortable, welcoming base.
Parker traces its roots to the 19th-century Twenty Mile House, a stage stop that served travelers along historic routes through the area. The town has grown dramatically since then, but its downtown still reflects some of that Colorado frontier heritage.
Must-sees and must-dos
- Downtown Parker (Mainstreet) — wander the town's walkable center for local restaurants, shops, community events, and a taste of Parker's small-town character.
- Parker trails & open space — explore the town's extensive network of trails, parks, and open spaces across the high-plains landscape.
- Cherry Creek Trail — walk or bike part of the regional trail system that passes through Parker and connects communities across the Denver metro area.
- Denver — head north for museums, restaurants, sports, and the attractions of Colorado's largest city.
- The Front Range — use Parker as a starting point for scenic drives and mountain outings west of the Denver metro area.
- Rocky Mountain National Park — if you have a full day, head farther into Colorado's high country for mountain scenery, wildlife, and hiking.
Our pro tip
We'd treat Parker as a comfortable, family-friendly base near Denver — especially if you're visiting relatives or want somewhere quieter outside the city. You'll want a car, since the Denver suburbs and mountain destinations are spread out.
Remember the altitude and give yourself a little time to adjust, especially if you're arriving from somewhere near sea level.
