Sayulita, Mexico
Sayulita is the laid-back surf-town flip side to Puerto Vallarta, just up the Nayarit coast, and we've folded it into our long Mexican winters.
Our experience
We've been back four times since 2025. We've stayed in its small boutique hotels in the colorful old center, including a 2026 stretch that flowed right into a longer Puerto Vallarta stay.
We love the bohemian, barefoot vibe: cobblestone lanes strung with papel picado, a beach break that draws surfers and beginners alike, taco stands and beach bars, and a creative, easygoing crowd. It's smaller and scruffier than the big resort towns in the best way — a place to slow all the way down between bigger adventures.
Sayulita was a sleepy fishing and farming village until a surf highway opened access in the 1960s — today it's a designated "Pueblo Mágico," Mexico's official label for towns of special cultural and natural charm.
Must-sees and must-dos
- Sayulita main beach — the beginner-friendly surf break in the heart of town.
- The town plaza & cobblestone streets — papel picado banners, galleries and street food.
- Playa de los Muertos — a quieter cove reached by a short walk past the cemetery.
- Surf lessons — the gentle waves make this a great place to learn.
- Local taco and ceviche stands — the casual food we plan our days around.
- Marietas Islands trips — boat excursions from the nearby coast.
Our pro tip
We've learned Sayulita pairs perfectly with a longer Puerto Vallarta base — it's an easy hop north for a few barefoot days. Come in the dry winter season for reliable sun.
The town is tiny and walkable but parking is a headache, so leave the car and wander. Mornings are calmest on the beach before the day-trippers arrive.
