Temecula, California
Temecula is our Southern California wine-country getaway, an easy drive from home, and we've made it our base for the vineyards twice — first in early 2024 and again in late 2025, when we joined a guided wine tour.
Our experience
We love the rolling hills dotted with wineries, the old-west charm of the historic Old Town, and the relaxed pace of a tasting-room weekend.
It's surprisingly close yet feels like a real escape: hot-air balloons drifting over the vines at dawn, country roads between estates, and easygoing afternoons that stretch from one tasting to the next.
For wine without the long haul to Napa, it's hard to beat.
Temecula's wine country owes much of its distinctive climate to the Rainbow Gap — a break in the coastal mountains that helps funnel cooler Pacific air into the valley, creating warm days, cooling afternoon breezes and cooler nights that are well suited to wine grapes.
Must-sees and must-dos
- Temecula Valley wineries — nearly 50 wineries and tasting rooms spread across the rolling wine-country hills.
- Guided wine tours — let a tour or driver handle the roads between the estates.
- Old Town Temecula — a walkable historic district of old-west buildings, shops and restaurants.
- Hot-air balloon rides — sunrise flights over the vineyards and surrounding hills.
- Pechanga Resort Casino — the large resort, dining and entertainment complex on the valley's edge.
- Wine Country backroads — scenic routes between wineries along Rancho California and De Portola Roads.
Our pro tip
We've learned to book a guided wine tour or a driver — the wineries are spread out and you'll want to taste freely.
Go on a weekday if you can; weekends get crowded and tasting rooms fill up. Mornings are cooler and quieter, and the balloon rides launch at sunrise, so plan an early start.
