Here in Kotor: Jim Finds La Rotata, the Little Focaccia Bar You'll Want to Return To

Olive-oil focaccia topped with cherry tomatoes and olives

Some of our favorite travel discoveries aren't famous landmarks at all — they're the little places you stumble into when you simply want something good to eat.

Our experience

Here in Kotor, Jim found La Rotata, a small focaccia bar near the waterfront that became exactly that kind of place for us. After exploring the old town and spending hours on our feet, it offered the perfect reset: casual, easy, and genuinely satisfying without turning lunch into another big event.

The focus is simple — focaccia sandwiches on soft, olive-oil-rich bread filled with Mediterranean combinations of cured meats, cheeses, vegetables, and greens. It's the kind of straightforward food that works especially well in the middle of a busy sightseeing day.

One of the best parts of staying somewhere for more than a quick stop is finding the places you'd actually return to. La Rotata felt like that for us — less about having a "must-eat" tourist meal and more about discovering an easy local favorite that could become part of your routine.

A little-known fact

In a destination surrounded by dramatic mountains, medieval walls, and the Bay of Kotor, sometimes one of the things you remember most is simply a really good sandwich.

Must-tries and must-dos

  • Try a focaccia sandwich — go for one of the Mediterranean-style combinations with meat, cheese, vegetables, and greens.
  • Make it a midday reset — stop after a morning exploring Kotor when you want something substantial without a long sit-down meal.
  • Pair it with the waterfront — eat before or after a walk along the Bay of Kotor promenade.
  • Explore Kotor Old Town — wander the stone lanes, churches, squares, and cafés before heading toward the waterfront.
  • Walk toward Dobrota — continue along the bay after lunch for a quieter side of Kotor.
  • Come back if you're staying awhile — this is exactly the kind of simple, reliable place worth adding to your rotation on a multi-day stay.

Our pro tip

We'd use La Rotata as an easy lunch before a long waterfront walk or as an early dinner after a full sightseeing day. Kotor has plenty of restaurants worth trying, but not every meal needs to become an event.

If you're staying nearby, a waterfront or old-town base makes it easy to combine food stops like this with walking the bay and exploring the historic center.
