Here in Kotor: Rod's 10,000-Step Promenade Walk Along the Bay
Kotor's Old Town is genuinely beautiful — stone alleys, churches, little squares, and cafés tucked into corners. But when Rod wanted a proper 10,000-step walk, those narrow medieval streets felt more like a maze than a route for getting into a steady rhythm.
Our experience
So we stepped outside the walls and followed the waterfront along the Bay of Kotor toward the quieter Dobrota side.
The difference was immediate: more space, fewer crowds, mountains rising dramatically around the water, and a route where we could simply keep walking without constantly thinking about navigation.
Once you leave the busiest part of Kotor behind, the walk also becomes a glimpse of everyday life along the bay — waterfront homes, little beaches, cafés, boats, and quieter corners that are easy to miss if you stay entirely inside the Old Town walls.
The Bay of Kotor can almost feel like a mountain-ringed river when you're walking beside it. The water narrows between steep slopes, creating scenery that feels very different from a typical seaside promenade.
Must-sees and must-dos
- Start near Kotor's Sea Gate — step outside the medieval center and make your way toward the waterfront.
- Follow the Bay of Kotor promenade — enjoy a flat, straightforward walk with water on one side and mountains surrounding you.
- Pass the small beaches — pause at the waterfront spots where locals and visitors swim and sunbathe.
- Walk toward Dobrota — extend the route into the quieter neighboring waterfront area for more steps and fewer crowds.
- Stop at a bay-side café — take a break for coffee, a cold drink, or something light while watching the boats.
- Turn around when it feels right — there's no need for a rigid route; walk until your steps, energy, or daylight tell you it's time to head back.
Our pro tip
For a 10,000-step goal, we'd start outside Kotor's Old Town and simply follow the waterfront toward Dobrota until we've covered roughly half the distance we want, then turn around.
Morning is ideal for softer light and quieter paths, while late afternoon gives the bay a completely different atmosphere as the sun drops behind the mountains.
The Old Town may be Kotor's headline attraction, but for us, getting outside the walls and simply walking beside the bay was one of the easiest ways to actually settle into the place.
